Dear Readers,

The month of August is known for the descension of Lord Krishna, hence the theme is Janmashtami. The scriptures repeatedly inform us that the only way to attain Shree Krishna is to love Him selflessly at all times and that the best method to do so is to engage in devotion of the Lord. What better time to start doing so than at the celebration of His birth?

Devotion has to be done with the mind and devotion to Shree Krishna is considered to purify the mind but we've probably never stopped to understand and reflect how and why this is so.  Thus, in the article titled 'Why is Bhakti Purifying?' we share the reasons behind this concept. In addition, we share a pastime of baby Krishna, the lyrics of which were composed by Shree Maharajji.

Finally, follow our News Updates to see how various centers celebrated Janmashtami and for Swamiji's most recently concluded programs in CO and TX. As summer starts drawing to a close, learn about the healing benefits of a Sun bath in our Wellness section. As usual, don't miss out on the contributions from our BM children and the special bhog recipe for this occasion.

"The Supreme Personality, who can annihilate infinite cosmic bodies simply by raising his eyebrows, has been bound by mother Yashoda's parental love and is seen getting terrified of a small stick in her hand."

मैया मेरो, रँग गोरो करि दे री |
maiyā mero, rañga goro kari de rī
The innocent little Kanhaiya tells his mother Yashoda,
"O Mother! Please make my complexion fair."

सबै कहत मोहिं कारो कारो, सखन सखिन हँसि के री |
sabai kahata mohiṅ kāro kāro, sakhana sakhina hañsi ke rī
All my friends call me black, and laugh at me and make fun of me.

भैया को गोरो मोहिं कारो, क्यों दुभाँति जनमे री |
bhaiyā ko goro mohiṅ kāro, kyoṅ dubhāñti janame rī
"O Maiya! You have done a great injustice by making brother Balaram fair, and me dark. Why did you do this type of partiality?"

सुनु लाला! कह मैया, वह तो, रँग भगवान दिये री |
sunu lālā! Kaha maiyā, vaha to, rañga bhagavāna diye rī
Mother Yashoda replied, "Listen, my son! Complexion of the body is given by God alone."

वह भगवान रहत कहँ मैया ! मारूँ मार घनेरी |
vaha bhagavāna rahata kahañ maiyā! mārooñ māra ghanerī
At this, baby Krishna immediately asked, "O Maiya! Where does that God live? Tell me right now, I will go and beat him up badly."

वेगि बताउ 'कृपालु' मातु न तु, गोद न अइहौं तेरी ||
vegi batāu 'kṛipālu' mātu na tu, goda na aihauṅ terī
In the words of Shree 'Kripalu', little Krishna tells his mother, "If you do not tell me soon where he lives, I will never again come to your lap."
Why is Bhakti Purifying?

In the Bhagavad Gita, Shree Krishna explains to Arjun that there are three paths to attain Him:  bhakti yog, karm yog, and jñān yog. The knowledge of bhakti is described by Shree Krishna as the king of sciences and the most profound of all secrets.  Why?

rāja-vidyā rāja-guhyaṁ pavitram idam uttamam
pratyakṣhāvagamaṁ dharmyaṁ su-sukhaṁ
kartum avyayam
(Bhagavad Gita v 9.2)

Let us understand this systematically. In Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna explains secret knowledge (guhya). This is knowledge of the soul (ātmā) as a distinct entity from the body. Then in Chapters 7 and 8, He explains more secret knowledge (guhyatar) about His powers. Finally, in Chapter 9, Shree Krishna reveals the most profound of all secrets (guhyatam), which is knowledge of pure bhakti. We see, how Lord Krishna, while revealing divine wisdom to Arjun, sequentially uses different forms of the word guhya (secret), and declares bhakti to be the supreme of all secrets. But why is bhakti given this topmost designation?

Knowledge of bhakti is considered the most profound secret because it purifies the one who practices it sincerely. How? Bhakti requires constant meditation upon the divine forms, abodes, names, qualities, pastimes, and saints of the Lord. As a result of this effort, three types of poisons are destroyed-the sin (pāp), seed of sins (bīja), and ignorance (avidyā). Let us attempt to understand these in detail.

The pāp or sin refers to sinful acts in this lifetime as well as those from endless lifetimes. When the mind is constantly attached to God (nirantar bhakti), we naturally refrain from engaging in sinful activities. Sinful behavior does not have to be stealing or something obvious; it can also be a subtle desire for revenge, respect, etc. But if the mind is engaged in the divine at all times, how can one engage in wrongdoing? Thus, bhakti not only refrains us from committing new sins, it also burns up the sins of the endless past lives.

Destroying the sinful acts is not enough as the propensity to co  mmit sinful acts in the future still exists. This is because the heart is still impure. For example, when one commits a robbery. One can atone for it by following the mandated punishment based upon the laws of the country. But what happens next? The moment one steps out of prison, he is ready to commit the same crime again! Why? Because the bīja or seed of the sin is the impure heart and consequently, the intent and thought of wrongdoing has not changed. How many times have we seen that one is already contemplating the next robbery while still in prison!

Healing Benefits of Sun Bath

Sunlight therapy also known as hellios therapy dates back to the ancient Greeks. Sunlight is the bests source of vitamin D. Dermatologists have brainwashed our mind with the concepts that the ultra violet rays of the sun is harmful and we should stay away from sun. This has made people sun-phobic. Exposure to the sun does not mean burning the skin or getting tanned. The key lies in safe, limited, healthy and strategic exposure to sun.

Usually the notion is that basking in the sun is the job of lazy ones. But in fact it is not so. It gives tremendous benefits to our health when we make it our habit to have sun bath every day. In the morning one should have sun bath with fewer clothes. The duration should be 10-15 minutes in the summer and 20-30 minutes in the winter. But one should avoid the windy place.

Some of the essential benefits of sunrays are:
  • boosts bone health and strengthens teeth
  • sun light is supposed to be anti-cancer and send breast cancer into remission.
  • sunrays boosts the immune system. The white blood cells called lymphocytes are activated by exposure to the sun and it plays a major role in guarding the body against infections.
  • sunrays has unique healing power, it disinfects and heal wounds and also kills the bad bacteria and cures fungal infection of the skin.
  • protects against dementia and brain aging
  • good for loosing excess fat
  • essential for decreasing symptoms of asthma
