Kartik Maas Traditions

In the Padma Puran, Shree Krishna confirms that the month of Kartik is dearest to Him. Radharani, the divine Mother, is the presiding deity of Kartik. The gopis observed the Katyayani Vrat this month to get Shree Krishna as their husband. Kartik month, however, is famous for the Damodar Leela, when Shree Krishna allowed Himself to be tied by his mother's love, Yashoda, to a mortarstone. Hence, people also refer to this month as Damodar Maas, and it is customary to recite the Damodarashtakam. This month, offering a ghee lamp and Tulsi leaves to Shree Radha Krishna with heartfelt devotion purifies the heart of sinful tendencies and creates Bhakti in the hearts of earnest seekers.

There are major Indian festivals in all Hindu spiritual traditions that are celebrated in the month of Kartik, such as Diwali, Govardhan Pooja, Bhaidooj, Karthigai Deepam, and Kartik Purnima.

Karthigai Deepam, a festival celebrated in South India on Kartik Purnima, commemorates Lord Shiva's appearance as the holy Jyotirling, an infinite pillar of divine light. Kartik month also celebrates Lord Kartik or Murugan. Six heavenly nymphs representing the Kartika constellation brought up six children created by Lord Shiva, representing His various divine attributes. Mother Parvati later merged the six children into a single child, who became Lord Kartik, the commander-in-chief of the celestial gods' army, and Lord Ganesh's brother. Sesame oil lamps are lit in honor of Lord Shiva and Lord Kartik. It is also the South Indian equivalent of Rakshabandhan, where sisters pray for the well-being of their brothers.
