Sankirtan or congregational chanting of the holy name of the Lord creates tremendous divine waves that forcefully cleanse the heart of its material impurities, preparing it to install the Lord’s living presence. It is the highest yajna or sacrifice prescribed in the Vedas. It reflects the desperate call of the tiny soul to Shri Krishna for rescue from the depraved ocean of material existence and a plea for the wealth of selfless divine love. Congregational chanting acts as a tremendous balancing force for the negative energies of the planet.
Kirtan offers immediate access to the Lord, as He is fully seated with His powers in the name. Hence as our heart gets purified we too experience divine bliss when chanting the name. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has laid down a condition for experiencing the bliss of the holy name.
तृणादपि सुनीचेन तरोरपि सहिष्णुना। अमानिना मानदेन कीर्तनीयः सदा हरिः ||
One must become more humble than a blade of grass and more tolerant than a tree; respect all and expect no respect for oneself; in such a condition one must chant the names of God.
